Varalakshmi Vratam, also known as Varalakshmi Nombu, is an important Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity. Observed during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) of the Sawan month, this auspicious day falls on Ekadashi Tithi, which in 2024 will be on August 16. The day is marked by fasting, worship, and various rituals aimed at seeking the Goddess’s blessings for financial stability and family well-being.

Significance of Varalaxmi Vrat

Varalakshmi Vratam is celebrated primarily by married women who fast to pray for their families, particularly for the health and longevity of their husbands. The term “Vara” means boon, and Goddess Lakshmi, as Varalakshmi, is revered for granting these boons to her devotees. The festival is observed with the belief that honoring Goddess Lakshmi on this day is equivalent to worshipping the Ashtalakshmi, the eight manifestations of the Goddess representing wealth, earth, learning, love, fame, peace, pleasure, and strength.

Symbolism of Goddess Lakshmi: A Unique Perspective

Goddess Lakshmi, revered as the embodiment of wealth, prosperity, and well-being, holds a significant place in Hinduism. During Varalakshmi Vratam Various symbols, objects, and elements from nature are closely associated with her, each carrying profound spiritual meaning. These sacred items, when offered during worship, are believed to invoke her blessings and enhance the spiritual efficacy of rituals.

Lotus Flower

Goddess Lakshmi is often depicted holding and seated upon a blossomed lotus. The lotus is not only a symbol of purity and beauty but also represents spiritual enlightenment. Offering lotus flowers to Goddess Lakshmi is said to be one of the most auspicious acts, as it is believed to deeply please her.

Elephant

White elephants are considered sacred to Goddess Lakshmi, symbolizing royal power and auspiciousness. In her form as Goddess Kamala, she is often portrayed with four elephants performing the sacred act of Abhishekam (ritual bathing) with nectar from golden pitchers, signifying purity and prosperity.

Shri

The sacred symbol ‘Shri’ is synonymous with Goddess Lakshmi and is often drawn during rituals, particularly during Lakshmi Puja. This symbol represents the goddess herself and is believed to invite her divine presence into the space where it is inscribed.

Gold Coins

As the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi is closely associated with gold, the symbol of material prosperity. She is often depicted with a golden pot overflowing with coins, symbolizing endless abundance. The gesture of showering coins is a sign of her benevolence and blessings of wealth.

Owl

Goddess Lakshmi is sometimes depicted riding an owl, a bird that, despite its modern reputation, is revered in religious texts. The owl symbolizes wisdom, penetrating vision, and an association with royalty, qualities that align with the goddess’s attributes.

Earthen Lamp (Deepak)

Light is sacred to Goddess Lakshmi, who shuns darkness. Earthen lamps, symbols of enlightenment and knowledge, are lit in abundance during Lakshmi Puja to welcome her presence. The lamps represent the dispelling of ignorance and the arrival of divine light.

Swastika

The Swastika is a powerful symbol that is deeply pleasing to Goddess Lakshmi. Traditionally drawn at the entrance of homes and on altars during Diwali, the Swastika is believed to attract her blessings and ensure prosperity.

Om

The sacred sound ‘Om’ is integral to Lakshmi worship. All mantras dedicated to her begin with Om, which represents the ultimate reality and truth. This ancient sound resonates with the divine energy of the goddess, making it a vital part of her invocations.

Cowrie

Yellow Cowrie shells are simple yet powerful offerings to Goddess Lakshmi. Easily accessible to both the rich and poor, these shells are cherished by the goddess and are used in rituals to invoke her blessings of prosperity.

Ekakshi Nariyal (One-eyed Coconut)

The rare Ekakshi Nariyal, which has only one ‘eye’ or spot, is considered a manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi. Unlike regular coconuts, it is not consumed but kept as a sacred object in homes to invoke the goddess’s presence and blessings.

Dhanya (Grains)

Grains, known as Dhanya, are symbols of sustenance and wealth. The presence of abundant Dhanya signifies the goddess’s blessings of prosperity. In her form as Dhanya Lakshmi, she bestows abundance and nourishment to all living beings.

Shri Yantra

The Shri Yantra is a powerful geometric symbol representing the goddess in her supreme form, Tripura Sundari Shri Mahalakshmi. It embodies all of her energy and power and is revered as the most potent of all Yantras, attracting wealth, prosperity, and spiritual growth
