ALS, scientifically termed Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, targets nerve cells in both the brain and spinal cord. Its name, originating from Greek, signifies a gradual degeneration of muscles controlling voluntary movement due to inadequate nourishment, primarily attributed to genetic mutations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Understanding ALS<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>ALS, according to the ALS Association, involves the progressive degeneration of motor neurons, which extend from the brain to the spinal cord and then to muscles throughout the body. This deterioration ultimately leads to the demise of these motor neurons, resulting in a loss of control over muscle movement initiation by the brain. Consequently, individuals afflicted with ALS may experience a decline in various voluntary actions, such as speaking, eating, moving, and breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Early Symptoms and Disease Progression<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial symptoms of ALS, as outlined by the US National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), encompass muscle twitches in limbs and the tongue, muscle cramps, stiffness, weakness, altered speech, and difficulties in chewing and swallowing. Typically, the disease manifests first in the hands or arms, hindering simple tasks like buttoning a shirt or writing. These drugs include Riluzole, Nuedexta, Radicava, and Tiglutik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Historical Context and Demographic Insights<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally identified by French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot in 1869, ALS is also colloquially referred to as Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease, honoring the renowned New York Yankees baseman who battled the ailment. Although ALS affects individuals across various demographics, it predominantly afflicts those aged between 55 and 75. Studies suggest a potential correlation between ALS and military service, possibly due to exposure to harmful toxins, though conclusive evidence remains elusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Genetic Factors and Familial Inheritance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Remarkably, approximately 90% of ALS cases occur without any familial genetic predisposition.
