The Central Government has given the green light for Telangana’s second airport in Warangal’s Mamnoor, marking a significant milestone for the state’s aviation infrastructure. Located less than 150 km from Hyderabad, the new airport is set to boost regional connectivity and economic growth.
1. Key Highlights of the Mamnoor Airport Project
- Central Government Approval: The Ministry of Civil Aviation has approved the development of the Mamnoor Airport, responding positively to the Telangana Government’s request.
- Land Acquisition: The state government has already allocated ₹205 crore for acquiring 253 acres of additional land required for the project.
- Infrastructure Development: The airport will be developed on the existing airstrip at Mamnoor, with plans to expand the runway, construct a terminal building, set up an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, and install advanced navigation systems.
- Historical Significance: The Mamnoor airstrip has a rich history, having been operational during the Nizam’s rule and even used during the Indo-China war.
2. Overcoming the 150-Km Clause
One of the major hurdles in establishing a second airport near Hyderabad was the 150-km clause in the concession agreement between the Government of India and Hyderabad International Airport Limited (HIAL). This clause prohibited the development of any new or upgraded airports within a 150-km aerial distance of Hyderabad for 25 years after the opening of the GMR-run Hyderabad Airport in 2008.
However, after discussions between Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and HIAL agreed to issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the Mamnoor Airport. This one-time waiver applies solely to the Warangal project, ensuring no precedent for future airport developments in the restricted zone.

3. Why Mamnoor Airport Matters
- Enhanced Connectivity: The new airport will improve air connectivity for Warangal and surrounding regions, reducing travel time and boosting tourism and business opportunities.
- Economic Growth: Improved infrastructure will attract investments, create jobs, and stimulate local economies.
- Regional Development: The airport will serve as a gateway for North Telangana, complementing Hyderabad’s international airport and easing congestion.
4. What’s Next?
With the Central Government’s approval and land acquisition underway, the focus now shifts to the development phase. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will oversee the project, ensuring world-class facilities and seamless operations.
A Step Towards a Brighter Future
The approval of the Mamnoor Airport is a testament to the Telangana Government’s commitment to infrastructure development and regional growth. As the state prepares to welcome its second operational airport, the project promises to transform Warangal into a key aviation hub, fostering progress and prosperity for the region.
