The Purvanchal Expressway is developed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA). It has significantly reduced travel time for nine districts in Uttar Pradesh, including Ayodhya, Lucknow, Barabanki, Sultanpur, Amethi, Azamgarh, Ambedkar Nagar, Ghazipur and Mau.
Apart from reducing travel time, the Purvanchal Expressway has also facilitated ribbon development around the connecting districts, generating new industries and employment hubs. It has become a convenient mode of transportation for the state’s eastern boundary and the national capital Delhi. 2. Purvanchal Expressway: Cost of the Project
The cost of constructing the Purvanchal Expressway is Rs. 22,494 crores, including land acquired for construction. The total construction cost is around Rs. 11,216. It is the estimated cost of construction of the Purvanchal Expressway till November 2021.

Purvanchal Expressway Route and Map
The Purvanchal Expressway runs through nine districts of Uttar Pradesh, namely Lucknow, Barabanki, Amethi, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh, Mau and Ghazipur. It starts from Chand Saray village, Lucknow district, and ends at Haydaria village, NH-31, Ghazipur district.

3. Purvanchal Expressway: Route Connectivity
The Purvanchal Expressway route stretches from Gosainganj in Lucknow district to Haydaria village on NH-31 in Gorakhpur. It is further linked to the Varanasi Azamgarh highway through a separate road. Also, the Gorakhpur link expressway will connect the Purvanchal expressway at Salarpur village in the Azamgarh district. This is a 340.8 km long route.
After construction of the 4-lane wide and 17 km long Buxar-Ghazipur elevated road, Lucknow will be connected directly to Buxar, Arrah and Patna and few other districts in Bihar via NH-922 and Purvanchal expressway.
Delhi connects via three expressways, namely the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, Yamuna Expressway, and Agra-Lucknow Expressway, to finally connect with the Purvanchal Expressway, making for a smooth connection to the eastern end of UP.
In March 2024, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the construction of two link expressways that will connect the Purvanchal Expressway and Agra Expressway.

Prayagraj-Dohrighat Corridor
Prayagraj-Dohrighat Corridor project is a 4-lane corridor connected to the Purvanchal Expressway route. It covers the districts of Prayagraj, Jaunpur, and Azamgarh and also connects the Purvanchal Expressway, 11 national highways, 2 state highways, 5 railway stations, and 2 airports.
Balia Link Expressway
Balia Link Expressway will help people reach Patna from Lucknow through the Purvanchal Expressway in just four and a half hours.
Agra-Lucknow Expressway
The Uttar Pradesh government is also planning to build an expressway linking two of the busiest expressways in the state, the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and the Purvanchal Expressway. Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, Yamuna Expressway, and Agra-Lucknow Expressway connect to Delhi via Purvanchal Expressway.
Gorakhpur Link Expressway
The Gorakhpur Link Expressway will connect the Purvanchal Expressway at Salarpur village in the Azamgarh district.
Route Connectivity with Bihar
The Purvanchal Expressway will be linked to Bihar via multiple projects. As of February 2025, there has been development in the process of this linking. These multiple projects are:
- Expansion of NH 727B – A new highway from Tamkuhi to Salempur in Uttar Pradesh is under development, which will pass via Gopalganj in Bihar. The acquisition of land in Bihar, in Bhore block Gopalganj has commenced in January 2025
- Greenfield Link: A 17 km, 4-lane connector will link the Purvanchal Expressway with Bihar. The link was approved in 2022
- Buxar-Bhagalpur Expressway: There is a proposal to set up a 350 km corridor from Buxar to Bhagalpur, which will go via Patna. This expressway is expected to improve interstate connectivity.

In March 2015, the then-Akhilesh Yadav-led government launched the Purvanchal Expressway project as the Lucknow-Azamgarh-Balia expressway. Later, in October 2015, it was re-launched as the Purvanchal Expressway project under Yogi Adityanath-led government.

- The Purvanchal expressway connects the districts in UP with seven railway-over-bridges and 22 flyovers.
- Near Kurebhar in Sultanpur district, the Purvanchal expressway is a 3.2 km long airstrip at Akhalkiri Karwat village. The purpose of the airstrip is to offer emergency landing to aircraft.
- Purvanchal Expressway reduces the travel time between Lucknow and Ghazipur. Now, travel time has been reduced to 10 hours between Lucknow and Ghazipur. Earlier, the travel time was approximately 15 hours.
