Outer Ring Road Introduction
The Outer Ring Road (ORR) Officially Jawaharlal Nehru Outer Ring Road in Hyderabad is a 158 km long, 8-lane, tolled expressway that encircles the city of Hyderabad. It was built to ease traffic congestion in the city and provide better connectivity to the surrounding areas. The ORR connects various major highways, such as NH-7, NH-9, NH-163, and NH-765, and passes through the districts of Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri.
The idea of constructing an outer ring road in Hyderabad was first proposed in the early 2000s, and the construction work began in 2005. In 2008, the authorities opened the first section of the ORR, which is a 22 km stretch from Gachibowli to Shamshabad. Later, they opened other sections of the ORR in phases and completed the entire stretch in 2019.
Inauguration of ORR:
The inauguration of the ORR took place in three phases. YS Rajasekhara Reddy, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, inaugurated the first phase of the ORR project on November 14, 2008. Jaipal Reddy, the then Union Minister for Urban Development, inaugurated the second phase on December 27, 2012. The final phase was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Telangana, on September 8, 2019.
Land Occupation and Budget of ORR:
The construction of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) in Hyderabad involved the acquisition of a significant amount of land. According to the official records, the government acquired a total of 7,800 acres of land for the ORR project. The authorities conducted the land acquisition process in a fair and transparent manner, and they provided compensation to the landowners based on the prevailing market rates
The cost of the ORR project was estimated at around Rs. 6,696 crores (approximately USD 896 million) at the time of its inception. However, due to various factors such as delays in land acquisition, environmental clearances, and other issues, the cost of the project escalated over the years. As per the latest estimates, the total cost of the ORR project is around Rs. 12,132 crores (approximately USD 1.6 billion).
