The construction of the Hyderabad Metro began in 2012, and the first phase of the project was inaugurated on November 28, 2017. The first phase included the opening of the Blue Line, which runs from Nagole to Raidurg, and the Red Line, which runs from Miyapur to LB Nagar. The Green Line, which runs from Jubilee Bus Station to Falaknuma, was opened on February 7, 2020.

Inauguration of Hyderabad Metro

The journey of the Hyderabad Metro Blue Line project began with the groundbreaking ceremony (Bhoomi Puja) and pillar erection on April 26, 2012. The first phase of the project, covering a distance of 16.8 kilometers) and 14 stations between Nagole and Ameerpet, was inaugurated on November 28, 2017, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The route was opened to the public on the next day.

The 8-station stretch spanning 10 kilometers between Ameerpet and HITEC City was inaugurated on March 20, 2019. The remaining three stations on the same section – Peddamma Gudi, Madhapur, and Jubilee Hills Check Post – were subsequently opened on March 30, April 13, and May 18 in the same year, respectively. On November 29, 2019, the final 1.5-kilometer section connecting HITEC City to Raidurg was made available to the public.

Which Company built Hyderabad Metro?

The Hyderabad Metro Rail project is a public-private partnership (PPP) between the Government of Telangana and a consortium led by the infrastructure development company, Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is the implementing agency of the project and is responsible for the planning, design, construction, and operation of the metro system.

Budget of Hyderabad Metro

The project was initially estimated to cost around INR 14,132 crores ($2.4 billion USD) and was funded through a mix of equity and debt. The Indian government provided a loan of INR 1,458 crores ($200 million USD) for the project, and the rest of the funding was raised through equity and debt from various sources.

Bidding:

The bidding for the Hyderabad Metro project was conducted in two stages. The first stage involved the pre-qualification of bidders, and the second stage involved the selection of the concessionaire through a competitive bidding process. The consortium led by L&T emerged as the successful bidder for the project.

In September 2018, L&T handed over the operation and maintenance of the Hyderabad Metro to Keolis, a French multinational company that specializes in public transportation. Keolis is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Hyderabad Metro under a 25-year contract.
