Bhogapuram Airport’s Status
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) received technical approval for the project site in June 2015. The project released a request for proposals (RFP) in July 2016. In August 2018, a pre-bid meeting took place, during which 13 developers expressed their interest. The GMR Group eventually received government approval to develop the project. The GMR Group also runs the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi and the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad.
Initially, the airport was intended to be part of a huge metropolis spanning around 5,311 acres of land. This extensive design comprised the Bhogapuram Airport, cargo facilities, an aviation academy, and a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility. Opposition from landowners caused the airport’s location to change to an approximately 2,200-acre area in Bhogapuram, serving Visakhapatnam. The state will utilize the public-private partnership (PPP) model for construction, retaining a stake through land holdings.
Larsen & Toubro secured the NOC for Bhogapuram International Airport. On May 3, 2023, they laid the airport’s foundation stone and received the construction contract in November 2023. The project will be completed in three phases by 2025, with Phase 1 accommodating a capacity of 6 million passengers per year. Following the completion of Phase 2, this capacity will expand to 12 million passengers per year. In Phase 3, the airport is expected to have an annual passenger capacity of 18 million.
Bhogapuram Airport’s Impact on Real Estate
The proposed international airport will boost economic growth in the North Andhra region. This discovery will aid the growth of the travel, logistics, and hospitality industries. Air access to foreign markets will boost industrial growth in Bhogapuram, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam districts, creating new job possibilities and increasing residential demand.
Bhogapuram is located about 20 kilometers from the Vizianagaram district headquarters, 60 kilometers from the Srikakulam district headquarters, and 18 kilometers from the Pydibhimavaram industrial zone. The arrival of more flights to and from Bhogapuram will make conducting business and travel easier, strengthening the commercial and residential property markets in the surrounding districts. The extension will boost commercial activity in Vizianagaram, contributing to the region’s social and civic infrastructure development.
