Overview
Warangal Airport, also known as Mamnoor Airport, is located in Mamnoor, Warangal, Telangana, India. It was once the largest airport in India and was operational until 1981. The Government of Telangana is currently working on reviving the airport for regional services. The airport spans approximately 1,000 acres (4.0 km²) of land.
Warangal Airport History
Warangal Airport was founded in 1930 by the last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan. It was built to support local industries, including the paper industry in Kagaznagar and Azam Jahi Mills in Warangal. The airport served as a landing site for numerous Prime Ministers and Presidents until its closure in 1981. It also served as an airbase during the Indo-China war.
Revival Plans
In September 2020, the Telangana government planned to acquire an additional 200 acres of land for the airport’s revival. They also requested the inclusion of the airport in the Government of India’s UDAN scheme. By October 2022, the government had allocated another 250 acres to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), adding to the already allocated 700 acres. In 2023, a joint inspection team was formed to speed up the survey procedure. On July 31, 2023, the Telangana State Cabinet approved the proposal to develop Mamnoor Airport, including land acquisition and construction of a terminal building and Extending the runway to allow larger aircraft like the Boeing 747.

Warangal Airport, at its peak, covered 1,875 acres (7.59 km²) and featured a 2 km runway, pilot and staff quarters, a pilot training center, and multiple terminals.
