2. A Brief History of Agatti Airport
The construction of Agatti Airport began in 1987 and was completed in 1988. Initially, the airport served Dornier 228 aircraft. Air India Regional began operating ATR-42 flights connecting Agatti with Kochi in 2010. The runway was resurfaced in the same year. Today, Alliance Air operates ATR-72 aircraft on routes from Agatti to Bangalore and Kochi.
3. Airport Facilities and Capacity
Agatti Airport is managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and covers an area of 18.56 hectares. The airport features a single asphalt runway oriented 04/22, measuring 1204 meters long and 30 meters wide. The terminal building can comfortably handle 50 passengers during peak hours. For navigation, the airport is equipped with DME and NDB aids.
4. Expansion Plans for Enhanced Connectivity
The AAI has plans to expand Agatti Airport to cater to larger aircraft and improve passenger experience. The expansion project involves extending the runway by 336 meters and constructing a new terminal building, ATC tower, fire station, and apron on a platform supported by pillars in the lagoon. The new terminal building will be fully air-conditioned and will handle 150 passengers at a time. The project also includes a new taxiway, parking spaces, and upgraded navigational aids.

Currently, Alliance Air operates flights from Agatti to Kochi. Starting March 31, 2024, IndiGo will commence flights connecting Agatti with Bangalore.
