An acre is one of the oldest units used to measure enormous swaths of land across the world, and it has experienced several alterations along the way. The Anglo-Saxon acre was originally defined across the British Empire as a strip of land 1 1/10 furlong, or 40 4 rods (660 66 feet).

In both the imperial and US systems, one acre is equal to 4,840 square yards, 43,560 square feet, 4,047 square meters, and 0.4047 hectares. An acre is sometimes defined as a space one furlong long by four rods broad.

Acre is extensively used as a land measuring unit around the world, including Canada, Jamaica, the United States, Spain, France, Germany, and much of South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. However, the unit is more widely used in the United Kingdom. In the Middle Ages, an acre of land was defined in England as an area that could be plowed in one day by a yoke of oxen. Because of the prevalence of this measuring unit throughout the British Empire, the size of farms was frequently reported in acres, even if stating them in square miles made more sense due to the enormous numbers involved.
