Gorakhpur, a city known for its numerous temples and monuments, including the famous Shri Gorakhnath Temple, has been rapidly developing. It is now adding another major infrastructure project to its portfolio: the Gorakhpur Siliguri Expressway. This expressway spans approximately 520 kilometers and will link Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh to Siliguri in West Bengal. The project, estimated at Rs. 32,000 crores, is slated for completion by December 2025.
Project Details
Initiative:
Part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana (BMP), the Gorakhpur Siliguri Expressway is a greenfield project planned to enhance connectivity and boost economic development.
Route:
The four-lane access-controlled highway will start from Jagdishpur in Gorakhpur and pass through various districts in Uttar Pradesh, including Gorakhpur, Deoria, and Kushinagar. It will then traverse nine districts in Bihar—East Champaran, West Champaran, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Darbhanga, Supaul, Kishanganj, Madhubani, and Forbesganj—before reaching Siliguri in West Bengal.
Construction:
LN Malviya Infra Projects Private Limited was tasked with preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR). The land acquisition process began in May 2022. The expressway will be built away from populated areas to avoid land acquisition challenges.

Route Map and Construction Details
The expressway will start from Jagdishpur in Gorakhpur and enter Bihar through Kushinagar’s Tamukhiraj tehsil, continuing through several districts before reaching Siliguri. The alignment will run along the India-Nepal border on its northern side and National Highway 27 on its southern side. The expressway will use Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) technology for enhanced security and performance.
